2. The Okavango Delta

Botswana

An extensive river delta, found inland in Northern Botswana, this wetland ecosystem is composed of vast permanent swamps, beautiful lagoons, dotted with emerald islands, forest and savannah.

The Okavango Delta is a pristine oasis that supports copious wildlife and over 400 species of birds. This waterlogged wonder world can be explored by land or by water. Meander through the many tight waterways in a Mokoro, the traditional dugout canoe, where passersby will include hippos and crocodiles, providing fantastic photographic opportunities. Or experience one of the world’s most famed game drives, and for the even more remote places take a guided tour on foot.

Other activities on offer include immersive cultural experiences with the local San communities who welcome visitors into their daily life and their participation in basket weaving, and traditional dance and music performances.

A desert wonderland of wide open spaces and the most stars you’ll ever see in the night sky, Namibia is wild, untouched, and with a population of only 2.5 million, is largely uninhabited. Its landscape is surreal and offers striking natural spectacles such as the mountainous sand dunes of the Sossusvlei region of the Namib desert, said to be the oldest in the world, the second largest canyon in the world, the Fish River Canyon, and lions that wander the beach. Home to hundreds of ethnic groups, it is a melting pot of people, some ancient, such as the Khoi San who lived nomadically and are said to be direct descendants of the earliest anatomically modern humans.

Many of these indigenous communities still preserved their heritage through song, dance, storytelling, and the practice of traditional skills such as artwork, basket weaving, and beadwork which can all be purchased at many local craft markets. Look out for live performances of traditional dance in the streets or take a tour of an indigenous village where your participation in the activities of their daily life is welcomed.
