The pride of Rwanda

Often referred to as the Land of a Thousand Hills, Rwanda is a country of mountain peaks, lakes, and forests. A country of warm friendly people, stunning scenery, and turbulent history, Rwanda welcomes visitors from all over the world for one particular reason, to catch a glimpse of the magnificent mountain gorilla.

This unique opportunity to see gorillas in their natural habit is a life-changing experience and one that Volcanoes National Park is known for. Not only is Volcanoes National Park home to Rwanda’s mountain gorilla population, but it is also the setting for the renowned book and film, “Gorillas in the Mist”.

“In the heart of Central Africa, so high up that you shiver more than you sweat, are great, old volcanoes towering almost 15,000 feet, and nearly covered with rich, green rainforest – the Virungas.”

Dian Fossey, the renowned primatologist

Set in the northwest corner of Rwanda, the national park protects the steep slopes of the Virungas mountain and is a sanctuary not only to the gorillas but to the golden monkey which is endemic to the area. As its name suggests, Volcanoes National Park is volcanic and provides an unusual ecosystem that is home to many species and the most incredible scenery.

The hillsides are covered in thick cloud forest which makes it a haven for many primate species as well as elephants, birds, and other wildlife.

Trekking to visit the mountain gorillas and golden monkeys is the main source of tourist income in the area and a large portion of the fee is allocated to the conservation and protection of the area and the primates within its care. This humbling encounter will allow you to experience the magic that is Africa. Every moment spent here is awe-inspiring, the beauty of the surroundings, the colorful and rare wildlife, the heartfelt hospitality is what makes this small part of Africa a true inspiration.

Situated on a hillside, the unrivalled Virunga Lodge is the epitome of one of Africa’s finest lodges

With understated luxury as its core, Virunga Lodge’s ten suites or bandas all have private terraces overlooking mountains and lakes and offer private butler service and a cozy fireplace.

Highlight activities include:

  • Gorilla Trekking
  • Golden Monkey Forest Walk
  • Community visits
  • Intore Dancers
  • Dian Fossey Research base

Going beyond the game viewing, the opportunity to witness the Royal or Warrior Dance, the Intore, is a spectacle of intricate movements and tells the story of the Rwandan people. Allow the rhythm of the drums to transport you to another time as the dancers share their culture with you. A visit to the nearby village, Iby’iwacu, where the community has convinced a group of ex poachers to reform and create a traditional dance group, brings a sneak peek into the local way of life.
