Set in the northwest corner of Rwanda, the national park protects the steep slopes of the Virungas mountain and is a sanctuary not only to the gorillas but to the golden monkey which is endemic to the area. As its name suggests, Volcanoes National Park is volcanic and provides an unusual ecosystem that is home to many species and the most incredible scenery.
The hillsides are covered in thick cloud forest which makes it a haven for many primate species as well as elephants, birds, and other wildlife.
Trekking to visit the mountain gorillas and golden monkeys is the main source of tourist income in the area and a large portion of the fee is allocated to the conservation and protection of the area and the primates within its care.
