Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge redefines the safari experience through its avant-garde design and immersive natural setting. Tucked within South Africa’s famed Sabi Sand Game Reserve, this lodge offers a serene retreat where wildlife and luxury coexist in harmony. The defining highlight is its seamless integration into the landscape, offering unobstructed views and intimate encounters with nature.

Guests embark on unforgettable game drives and guided walks, but it’s the lodge’s architectural innovation and tranquil atmosphere that leave a lasting impression. Earth Lodge is not just a place to stay – it’s an experience that stirs the soul.

Carved into a slope of the earth, Earth Lodge disappears into the surrounding terrain

Emerging like a natural extension of the land, Earth Lodge’s award-winning design by architect Enrico Daffonchio uses organic materials like mud, stone, and thatch, giving the structure a grounded, earthy presence. Each space blends raw textures with refined elegance, evoking a cave-like stillness softened by curated art and hand-crafted furnishings.

Opened in 2001 and constantly evolving, Earth Lodge has become a celebrated example of eco-conscious luxury, offering guests both aesthetic beauty and deep connection to the wilderness.

Everything you need to know about Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge

Earth Lodge offers 12 ultra-luxurious suites and one exceptional Amber Suite. Each suite has a private plunge pool, open-plan living spaces, and organic architectural design that blends seamlessly into the natural landscape.

Suites include a private deck with a plunge pool, air-conditioning, indoor and outdoor showers, a deep soaking tub, minibar, walk-in dressing area, and curated handcrafted furnishings. The design focuses on tranquillity, space, and connection to the surrounding wilderness.

Earth Lodge is sculpted directly into the landscape, giving it a distinctive, almost hidden presence. Natural materials, organic lines, and contemporary African art characterise the lodge, creating a calming, immersive environment often described as a “living gallery.”

Dining is a multi-sensory affair, with meals served in the open-air boma, elegant dining room, or in Earth Lodge’s remarkable underground wine cellar. The menus focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients paired with premium South African wines.

Guests enjoy twice-daily game drives, guided bush walks, birding experiences, stargazing, photographic opportunities, and access to the gym and spa. Game drives are led by expert guides and trackers, ensuring exceptional wildlife sightings.

Earth Lodge maintains a calm, sophisticated atmosphere and generally does not allow children under 12 unless the lodge is booked exclusively. This ensures a tranquil experience ideal for couples, honeymooners, and guests seeking privacy and serenity.

Earth Lodge lies within prime Big Five territory, offering excellent opportunities to see lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo. The region is also rich in plains game, birdlife, and nocturnal species spotted during evening drives.

The lodge can be reached via a short flight to the Sabi Sabi airstrip, followed by a private transfer. Premier Africa can arrange all flights and transfers, ensuring a seamless journey from start to finish.

Earth Lodge’s award-winning spa offers a range of therapeutic treatments, including massages, facials, and holistic rituals. There is also a meditation garden, fitness centre, and relaxation areas overlooking the bush.

Sabi Sabi operates under a strong conservation ethos focused on sustainability, wildlife protection, and community engagement. Guests directly support these efforts, helping preserve the delicate ecosystem and supporting local communities through responsible tourism.

“Sabi Sabi” is derived from the nearby Sabie River, historically known as the “River of Fear”, a reference deeply rooted in the early encounters by locals with crocodiles and hippos along its banks. The word “Sabi” also draws from the Portuguese and Tsonga words meaning fear or danger, further emphasizing the untamed spirit of the African wilderness.

The guiding philosophy behind the Sabi Sabi lodge collection is expressed through the concept of “Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow”. As such, Selati Camp represents the past, Bush Lodge and Little Bush Camp the present, while Earth Lodge embodies “Tomorrow”, a vision of African Renaissance rooted in innovation, sustainability, and artistic expression.

Earth Lodge’s bold, award-winning architecture, sculpted from the earth itself, reflects its future forward vision through immersive spatial design and the use of purely organic materials.
Much of the sculptural décor, including bar counter and wood carvings, was created by renowned South African artist Geoffrey Armstrong to enhance the lodge’s artistic identity.

This unique narrative extends to the dining venues as well, from the tranquil Garden of Contemplation to the subterranean wine cellar housing over 6,000 rare bottles. Thoughtfully curated culinary experiences also include high tea which offers delicious savory bites plus homemade beverages.

At Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge, the official check in time for all guests is between 12:00 PM and 12:30 PM, while check out is typically between 10:00 AM and 10:30 AM.

While Earth Lodge generally accommodates guests aged 13 or older, families with younger children are more than welcome to engage with the EleFun Centre located at the nearby Bush Lodge. This dedicated, complimentary “kids club” aimed at youngsters aged 4-12 provides nature themed educational activities, indoor/outdoor play, arts & crafts, and bushcraft skills led by trained staff in a fun, safe environment, allowing parents to enjoy their safaris or spa time with peace of mind.

At Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge, guests are given the unique opportunity to engage more closely with the surrounding local communities through optional cultural experiences that offer a more authentic and personal connection to the region.

Community visits typically set out after breakfast and are offered at an additional cost, with all tour fees being reinvested directly into local development initiatives through the Sabi Sabi Foundation.

Tours of the neighbouring communities of Lillydale, Justicia, and Huntington, where the majority of the lodge’s staff reside, offer enriching insight into the everyday living, local traditions, and Shangaan culture of the locals, while also revealing more about the education, health, and economic upliftment projects supported by the reserve.

Beyond these organised tours, local interaction is already naturally woven into the stay, as many team members who come from these communities are proud to share their stories and heritage.
