Desert Rhino Camp lies in the midst of the enormous Palmwag Concession, where trackers patrol and protect one of the largest free-ranging populations of the Endangered desert-adapted rhino in Africa. Rhino tracking on foot and by vehicle with these dedicated men is an original and exclusive wilderness experience. The camp consists of only 8 meru style tents overlooking an expansive pan dotted with welwitschia, Namibia’s national plant.

What is the Wildebeest Migration and are we guaranteed to see it?
The Serengeti Under Canvas camp movement is carefully planned to anticipate the movements of the Great Migration, bringing you as close as possible to the wildebeest action. The campsites move five times a year to better enable our guests close access to this extraordinary phenomenon.
Considered the most thrilling spectacle in the animal kingdom, the annual mass migration of wildebeest and other herbivores, with their ever-attendant entourage of predators is a breathtaking experience.
In this year-round cycle across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, over 1.5 million wildebeest, 400,000 zebra, 300,000 Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelle and 12,000 eland throng the landscape, following the rain, in search of fresh pastures.
The timing of this phenomenon has changed in recent years due to uncertain rainfall patterns, with herds splitting and moving in different directions, before reassembling again.
During June, the herds usually congregate in the western corridor and start moving north. The herds move northwest, where dependent on the rain we see the animals crossing the Grumeti River towards the Northern Serengeti.
Luggage and packing suggestions
You will receive a soft-sided Premier Africa safari bag which is a special lightweight bag to use for your trip. You will receive this before you leave the USA for ease of packing.
A maximum of 33 lbs of luggage per person is allowed for light aircraft flights, including hand luggage and camera equipment. It is important that you carry soft-sided bags (bags without wheels are allowed).
Recommended Packing List:
As a general guide, comfortable and casual clothing that you can wash and wear is recommended while on safari. Muted colors are best for game viewing. Game drives are generally conducted in the early morning and the late afternoon, which can be cold, especially in winter. The temperature often warms up during the day, so it is best to dress in layers.
Clothing on safari should be comfortable and colors should blend in with nature as much as possible. Greens, browns, and khaki-colored clothing are advisable.
Evening dress in the lodges and camps is ‘smart casual,’ there is no formal wear required. We advise guests to dress in a way they feel most comfortable.
A complimentary laundry service is available at all safari lodges.
